MEXICAN HAMMOCKS
Used
mainly in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, they are still handmade
by craftsmen in rural communities, following traditional and non
standardized techniques. They are used as beds for the whole family
in thousands of Mexican households.
Their
extraordinary softness and breadth makes them the best hammock in
the world.
Since
the eighties we have bought our hammocks directly from the villages
of Yucatan, where we ourselves select them. We deal directly with
weavers and rural cooperatives.
The
Mayas are the only ones who have invented a technique of weaving
specific to the making of hammocks. This technique uses relatively
little non elastic material and produces a large extended surface.
It thus offers ventilated bedding, obtained from very thin thread,
which is woven, not knotted.
The
Mayas originally used Sisal, cactus fibre, to make their hammocks.
Their descendants have kept the same techniques but now use cotton,
nylon and mostly polypropylene.
The Mexican hammock comes in several sizes, the most popular being: DOUBLE, MATRIMONIAL and FAMILY size. The
hanging parts are polypropylene and the body is cotton. |
